AI summary: Lead and build the design function for a growing HealthTech platform, managing a team of designers while setting design standards and creating a coherent design system across multiple products.
At Recare, we are growing from one product to many, and the design function needs to grow with it.
Today, three designers support a multi-product hospital platform across native mobile, desktop, and web. As the platform expands, we need a senior design leader who can build and lead the design organisation as the company scales.
As Head of Design (m/w/d), you will lead the design function at Recare. You will set the design quality bar, build and develop the team, and create a coherent design language across products that serve different users on different surfaces.
This is a leadership role, but not a hands-off one. In the first 6โ12 months, you will work alongside the team directly: shaping the design system, reviewing work, and making design decisions in Figma. Over time, the role will shift further towards strategic direction, hiring, and coaching as the team grows.
You will report to the Director of Product and work closely with the Head of Product, Head of Engineering, and product team leads.
You will build the design organisation Recare needs as it grows from one product to a broader platform.
That means creating stronger coherence across products, raising the quality bar across teams, shaping how design works with product and engineering, and helping the company design for increasingly AI-powered workflows and experiences.
Purposeful work โ your work has a direct impact on patients, hospital teams, and digital healthcare.
Remote-first and flexible work โ Recare works remote-first, with flexible working hours and Berlin office access.
Workations and flexibility โ depending on setup and agreement, Recare supports flexible work arrangements and time working abroad.
Learning & development โ regular feedback, development support, and a learning budget.
Tools and hardware โ a modern setup and AI as part of everyday work.
Additional benefits โ including an Edenred card and an extra day off on your birthday.
You will lead a design team that currently consists of three designers and is expected to grow as product teams scale.
You will hire, structure, and develop the team, decide how design capacity is allocated across product groups, and build the design organisation Recare needs for the next 2โ3 years, not just the next quarter.
Recareโs native mobile, desktop, and web products each have different constraints, but they need to feel like one product family.
You will lead the design system across the platform, including visual language, interaction patterns, component libraries, and Figma infrastructure. In the beginning, this work will be hands-on. Over time, your role in this area will become more strategic as the team grows.
You will define the quality bar for design across the company and help ensure that products ship to a consistently strong standard.
That includes reviewing work, giving feedback, and helping designers and teams produce work that is clear, thoughtful, and high quality across product areas.
Recareโs products increasingly involve AI-generated, non-deterministic outputs.
Voice capture produces transcriptions that vary. Document generation creates clinical letters that require human review. Agent and chat products can produce different answers each time.
Designing for these kinds of products is different from designing traditional flows and forms. You will help shape the frameworks and patterns needed for variable outputs, error states, confidence signals, and human-AI collaboration.
You will help shape how design works with product and engineering as the organisation scales.
This includes review rituals, handoff workflows, and ensuring design input happens early enough in the process to matter. The goal is not more bureaucracy, but enough structure that design does not become a bottleneck or an afterthought.
8โ10 years in design, including at least 3โ4 years leading teams
Progression from individual contributor design work into design leadership
Still close enough to the craft to open Figma and do real work, while being experienced enough to lead and grow a team
Experience building design in a multi-product organisation, not just on a single product
Experience creating coherence across products with different surfaces and user types
Strong design system experience, including building or significantly evolving a system that works across multiple platforms
A strong understanding of the balance between consistency and flexibility
A view that a design system is a product, not just a style guide
Strong product taste and a high bar for simple, considered, high-quality experiences in B2B software
An understanding of how AI changes both the design process and the products being designed
Thoughtful perspective on, and ideally experience with, designing for non-deterministic AI-powered products
Ability to scale a design team over time, including hiring, structuring designers across product teams, and making decisions about when to use contractors
Strong mentoring and development skills for designers at different levels
Comfort working in regulated environments such as healthcare, fintech, or similar
An understanding that compliance and accessibility are not optional extras
Experience in a startup or scale-up environment, with the ability to make strong decisions quickly in a resource-constrained setting
English as a working language; German is a nice to have, not a requirement
Someone who combines craft and leadership
Someone who can build design across multiple products, not just optimise one
Someone with strong opinions about quality, coherence, and interaction design
Someone who finds designing for AI-powered, variable-output products interesting rather than intimidating
Someone who is comfortable being hands-on now, while helping build the function for the future
A designer who wants to remain a full-time hands-on IC
Someone who has only worked in single-product companies
A design manager who is strong on process but does not have strong design opinions
Recare has a stronger and more scalable design function
Products across mobile, desktop, and web feel more like part of the same product family
The design system is stronger, clearer, and more useful across teams
Design quality is more consistent across product areas
Design is involved early enough in product development to have real influence
